Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Cardiothoracic Surgery

BAME trainees represent almost half of cardiothoracic surgery NTN trainees. But unfortunately, in the UK, BAME trainees are still more likely to face discrimination and less likely to get a permanent consultant post, and less likely to climb the leadership ladder in their organization compared to their white colleagues.  The recent SCTS EDI survey highlights many of the challenges faced not only by trainees but also medical students, Trust appointed doctors and consultants.

At the NTCCTS we are committed to promoting equity in rights and opportunities, to proactively tackle discrimination or disadvantage in all forms and to create an open and inclusive culture for our trainees. Our EDI (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion) strategy is focused on ensuring that everyone is treated fairly and has equal access to opportunity. We aim to influence cardiothoracic training policymakers to implement these goals by bringing to the forefront the stories of trainees who experience discrimination in the workplace.
